Olive Tree & Tree Nymph
5" x 7" Acrylic on Canvas Panels
Available

These are based on a photo ref of a beautiful old Olive Tree. Other people see pictures in clouds...I see them everywhere. In this case I saw a male and female figure in the tree.

I consider this to be a break through piece. I am learning to use color more, and this one is just a little more "painterly". I am quite pleased with the results.

Reflections

Reflections
Work in Progress
9" x 12" Fluid Acrylic on Canvas Panel
Available

I love this piece. I wasn't certain I was up to the challenge of all the colors reflecting through the glass apple, and bouncing off the table, the fruit, and back again...but this has really been fun. Almost like doing a jigsaw puzzle, as I fit glow to glow.

I also really like the juxtaposition's occurring in this piece... of the glass apple against the real pear and orange; of the height of the apple and pear against the orange; of the luxury of the glass apple, against what I have altered to be a tattered tablecloth and a worn table; etc.

Catching up...

We lucked into some really nice weather here the middle of November, so I used the time to put separation coats and varnish on the stack of paintings needing it. We also delivered the three paintings to the show in Breckenridge, making for a nice outing. Still very little snow up there, I would have enjoyed seeing the white stuff, but clear roads certainly made the drive very pleasant. And, I am getting caught up on all the paintings I have sitting around the studio needing touch ups, or this or that. I feel good when I take time to do all these little tid bits. It's kind of a fall clean up of the studio... a little late...but I get that same sense of completion and strangely achievement at having accomplished the little tasks one has put off in order to paint.

Baby Asian Elephant
7" x 7.5" Acrylic on Canvas Panel
Available

Malti was a Baby Asian Elephant at the Calgary Zoo. She lost her battle against an elephant-specific virus on Nov. 1st. I felt compelled to create a painting in honor of this little one..and in a setting similar to the natural habitat for these elephants.

This was an experiment to try and use a jewel tone type palette for a landscape. I really enjoyed playing with this. Since finishing it, I have scanned the painting into photoshop and tried cropping it to see what would happen, and found there are a number of different ways this one panel could be cut and displayed as smaller pieces.

All Three Of My Entries Were Juried In!

I got a call from the Gallery in Breckenridge....all three of my entries were accepted into their Small Works Show. I am so excited I can hardly believe it. I've never had all my entries accepted before!

One week ago today, I saw a huge meteor as I was driving home. It was so beautiful...a huge green flame of gases at the front, and it was going so straight and appeared to be going so slow I wasn't certain whether it was a really big meteor...or what. The local newspaper confirmed the next day it had been a meteor. I have a friend who is into astrology, and she says seeing that meteor was very good luck. Going by today's news, maybe she is right!

Sketchbook: Pack Mule

This was another of Mithila's WDE images, of a pack mule in the Himalayan mountains. I thought it was so cute, I'd like it in my sketchbook. I am trying to put in one little painting for each of the WDE hosts, as a remembrance.

Spirit Of The Himalayas

A123
Spirit Of The Himalayas
5" x 7" Acrylic on Canvas Panel

The new week's hostess of the WDE challenged us to take one of her images and make it an abstract. The photo I used was full of cloud images, and this image was so strong to me, that I actually doodled it while speaking with my Dad on the phone. It just seemed so natural, the only thing I had to move was the tree...which makes it lean to the surreal side but I believe these types of paintings come out however they want to.
