Boats at Stresa

A103
Boats at Stresa
11 1/4" x 7 3/4 " Acrylic on 300 lb Watercolor Paper
Available

This beautiful Italian scene was a WDE reference from way back in July. I knew I was over-reaching when I tried to do it, but I just fell in love. :) I have had most of the painting done all of this time, but was terrified I would ruin it with one of my lesser attempts at water. For some reason this week, I just felt like it was time. So I braved it, and am so very happy to see it complete as it should be. And I am still in love with this one.

This Amish Farm is the third in my series of Fields. Stacked by hand, the crop is covered with an extra bundle to keep it from rain until it can be stored. While this is certainly a different scene than the flower fields, it is to my way of thinking just as pretty and well deserving of being included.

Mighty Might

A101
Mighty Might
5" x 7" Acrylic on Canvas Panel

This was another attempt at a white animal. This adoreable little Alpaca baby was just begging to be painted. I am not totally certain what happened, but my paint was literally being eaten up by the canvas...thus Mighty's legs look like he is in really tall grass. I will just credit that to oddities of paint and materials and let it go as such.

100 Paintings!

The Quilt Barn was my 100th painting on this amazing journey. I can't believe I have painted so many now...yet it is almost as if I can't stop. I wake up and all I want to do is paint. I can't sleep because I am thinking about the next days paintings. I practically live to paint at this point. I don't know if that is good or bad, but it is certainly letting me progress at what I think is an astonishing rate. It seems like yesterday that I tentatively purchased books and paint and attempted that first painting from the Walter Foster book. I can't wait to see what the next 100 brings. I hope to hit that mark before the end of the year. :)

Eight-Pointed Star Quilt Barn
8" x 10" Acrylic on Unstretched Canvas
Available

This is my depiction of one of the 20 Quilt Barns in Monroe County, Ohio. Called the "Patchwork Jewels", the selected barns were each painted with it's own distinct quilt block throughout the year 2004. Being a quilter myself, I thought this was such a fun way to "dress up" the barns... and such a fitting testimony to the area that is known to many of us as "quilt country."

Both of these were created doing experiments with fluid acrylics on canvas panels for the backgrounds, to see what would happen. I love to experiment with paint, and these two were really fun to create.

Moonlit Run

Moonlit Run
8" x 10" Acrylic and Iridescent Acrylics on Canvas Panel
Available

This started as a study on how to paint a white animal without using pure white...and kind of ran off with me. The next thing I knew I was putting sparkly Iridescent paint on it, and trees had given way to a moon and sparkly clouds. Almost an ice and crystal kind of place. I am still debating whether or not to put the tree branches back in...only to make them icy to match the rest of the painting.

This was made from the reference photo for the September Different Strokes challenge provided by EP. I thought it would be fun to see if I could fit the basic idea onto an ATC. I think it turned out pretty cute.

ATC: Mica Kitten

Mica Kitten
ATC
Acrylic on Canvas
Sorry, I've been Traded.

This was a really fun piece created with multiple experiments. One for the background and one for the kitten. The background is kind of a random thing, and you don't really know how it will turn out. I thought this piece looked somewhat like a tapestry. So I then took one of Lorna's many kitties in a photo, and painted it and the edges of the tapestry with Interference Acrylic...which has Mica Flecks in it. It doesn't sparkle much on the screen, but like Mica, as the sun catches it, it just sparkles. What I wasn't expecting is the way the Interference Acrylic went on, the Kitten almost looks "spun" like threads. All in all a great experiment.

Photo Shoot: RMNP

Went for another photoshoot in Rocky Mountain National Park again today. We were hoping to get some good Elk herd pics. But came across one big guy so close to the road, we couldn't pass it up. Spent most of the afternoon shooting him, and also got some more landscape photos. I was kind of hoping the aspens would have begun turning color...but not quite yet. Great photography practise, and building a really nice group of photos to use for painting references...just don't know when I'll have the time to get to them. LOL. The WDE hosts just keep providing such fun pics that it makes it hard to get much else done. I am not posting a picture of our outing this time...as a number of them will be My own submissions to the WDE in October when I host. ;)

Seeing Spots

Seeing Spots
8" x 10" Acrylic on Archival Ampersand Smooth Claybord
Available

Lorna captured this little deer playing with her garden ornament, and I had to paint him. We have many Mule Deer here, but I have never had the chance to photograph a day old fawn! She measured him against the garden decoration and said he was only about 18 inches tall on the day she got this pose.

I thought it would be fun to use the same paints and have a butterfly of the same color, spots and look...well sort of...looking back at him.

Barn Swallows

Barn Swallows
10" x 12" Acrylic on Canvas
Available

These little babes were really fun to do. I may work on this piece more as far as the nest and background...but I kind of like it dark like this so they are the focal point they should be. This piece looks nice cropped in closer to them in a long skinny shape also.

Tree Study #1

Tree Study #1
5" x 7" Acrylic on Canvas Panel

I have been doing a lot of tree studies this month. I have been focusing on drawings, reading, practising from books and some painting of my drawings. This is a painting I did off one of my tree studies. It's purpose is to help me to learn to see the sky between the leaves. :)
